Many people have had a "not so great" experience with a real estate agent. Everybody knows that real estate agents rank just under used car salesman in national opinion polls.  Unfortunately, these polls are undoubtedly true. I deal with real estate agents every day, and I simply have to concur: there are plenty out there who are no help at all, even on their best day. 

     Because of this, people dread having to business with a real estate agent. This is truly unfortunate, and the only thing I can say is, "You've obviously never had a really great realtor!" Not only do I save my clients hundreds of thousands of dollars every year, they become my biggest fans.

     You could "do your own deal," and try to eliminate the agents altogether, but that's like "do-it-yourself dentistry": you could do it, but you probably won't be happy with the results!  Not only that, but it's almost impossible to find a home where there is no agent involved.
